Beagles have been used to hunt the hare in England for centuries, and by the time of Elizabeth I, nearly every nobleman in England kept a pack of hounds of some sort. By the mid-eighteenth century Foxhounds became popular with the younger generations, partly because they were faster than Beagles who were typically followed on foot. However, hunting with Beagles continued as a sport, and even to the present day there are many active Beagle packs in both Great Britain and the United States. |
