As its name implies, the Brussels Griffon originated in Belgium, evidently a cross between a German Affenpinscher and a Belgian street dog. In the late nineteenth century it was crossed with a Pug, which explains why there are two distinct types of coat in the Brussels Griffon, the rough and the smooth, the smooth being known as the Brabancon.

By 1880, the Brussels Griffon, then known as the Griffon Bruxellois, was well established in the show dog world, the parent club being established just before the turn of the century. The breed is, of course, most at home in Belgium, but breeders in both Britain and America have added to the popularity of the little dog.
