As its name implies, the Gordon Setter comes from Scotland and it can trace its origin at least as far back as 1665 when Markham, a writer of the time, praised a "black and fallow setting dog... hardest to endure labor." The history of the breed as we know it today began in a strain of Setters kenneled at Gordon Castle, during the life of the fourth Duke of Gordon (1743-1827). The breed was clearly depicted in the original watercolor by Sydenham Edwards, used for the Cynographia Britanica, dated 1805.
