Although the Boxer of modern times is a trim, muscular and well-balanced guard and companion animal, it once looked more like its ancestor, the Molossus-type dog. It was in the late nineteenth century that a group of dog fanciers bred the “Bullenbeisser’, the descendant of early Molossus-type dogs, to the English Bulldog.

The Bullenbeisser was a strong, single-minded dog that had been used in Germany and the Netherlands for hunting boar, deer, and even bear. The first Boxer to be exhibited in a dog show was the dog Flocki, which was shown in Munich in 1895. Three months later a precursor of the modern Boxer specialty show was held, with only Boxers entered. Through selective breeding, the German Boxer fanciers developed the breed more or less to what we know of it today, and it success in dog shows of the early twentieth century helped promote it around the world.
