The largest of the British Terriers, the Airedale is not of ancient origin. It was undoubtedly a cross between the Otterhound and the Welsh or Old English Black-and-Tan Terrier, probably just appearing around 1850 in Yorkshire. Originally, the breed was known as the Waterside Terrier or the Bingley Terrier. Later, partly at the suggestion of Dr. Gordon Stables and Mr. Hugh Dalziel, it was named the Airedale Terrier because of its popularity in the valley of the Aire. |
