In 1876, a tremendous stimulus was given the breed by the formation of The Fox Terrier Club. The idea originated at a dinner party at the Russell Square home of Harding Cox ( a popular dog show judge, he played a major role in popularizing the Wire-coated Fox Terrier). A committee was formed and a breed standard compiled. From this time onward, separate registers were kept for the different coated varieties, although cross-breeding between them was still allowed and practiced. In the 1880's, the Fox Terrier Club became the strongest of all the specialty breed clubs. Fox Terriers were very popular until well into the twentieth century, and their popularity is reflected in the visual arts. |
