Group: Terriers
Breed Family: Terrier |
|
This Terrier is descended from white and pale cream Cairn Terriers, which, according to Clifford Hubbard, in Dogs in Britain, had usually been destroyed at birth for reasons based mostly on superstition. The Malcolm family, of Poltalloch in Argyll, thought differently. They believed that a white dog used to destroy vermin in the rocky crags of the Highlands was easier to see. Known as the Poltalloch Terrier or the Roseneath Terrier, Colonel E. D. Malcolm said that prior to their appearance at dog shows they had been bred and maintained by his family for more than one hundred years. So while most Cairn breeders were eliminating the whites from their strains, the Malcolm family were working the opposite way; rejecting all the colored dogs. By the time that they were introduced at dog shows by Colonel Malcolm at the beginning of the present century, they were firmly established. |
