John Martin Tracy
(American, 1843 -1893 )

Tracy was one of a handful of American artists who, in the late nineteenth century, specialized in sporting dogs, Like Rosseau and Osthaus, he often painted sporting dogs working in the field, often with and extensive landscape.

He attended Oberlin College and Northwestern University of Chicago but between 1866 and 1868 studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Initially a painter of landscapes, the also exhibited a full-length portrait of his wife at the Salon of 1874.

In 1831 Tracy moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where he painted the majority of the sporting dog painted for which he became known. He later moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
