Franklin Brooke Voss
(American, 1880 -1953 )

Franklin Voss came from a family of horsemen and fox hunters. His father was a founding member of the Rockway Hunt Club in Long Island and his uncle Joseph was a founding member of the Elkridge Hunting Club in Maryland. As a boy, Voss rode to the hounds with both these hunts, and was a regular steeplechase rider. He studied for seven years at the Art Student’s League in New York, specializing in horse portraits.

In the 1930'sthe Voss family moved to Maryland where Franklin, his brother and their sister all lived together on a small farm near the Elkridge-Hartford hunt club. Franklin was an active fox hunter as well as a steeple chaser. Between 1920 and 1950, he completed some 500 commissions for prominent sporting families
