Hardcover Published by the Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland to accompany the exhibition The Monarch of the Glen; Landseer in the Highlands held at the Royal Scottish Academy, 2005.
Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) was the greatest British animal painter of the nineteenth century, and for his contemporaries the greatest artist of the age. The secret of his success lay in his ability to invest the natural world with feeling and imagination, allied to brilliant descriptive powers. His animals are so accurately portrayed that you feel you could reach out and touch their fur. Engravings of his works reached a huge audience, making him the best-known artist in Britain.
Richard Ormond, an internationally recognized scholar of Victorian painting, was Director of the National Maritime Museum, and before that Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery. He is now an independent art historian and commits himself full time to writing. He is also Director of the John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonne project.
